Apply for a Special Ballot
Electors may apply to vote by Special Ballot if they are unable to vote at any of the advance voting locations or on Election Day. Electors choosing this voting option must declare their reason for voting by Special Ballot.
Applicable reasons to request a Special Ballot include:
- Physically disabled,
- Away from their electoral division,
- An inmate,
- An election officer, candidate, official agent, or scrutineer, or
- Living in a remote area, as defined in the Election Act.
Special ballots may be completed in the returning office, at Elections Alberta, picked up by a designate of the elector, or mailed to the elector.
Applications for Special Ballot to vote by mail are now open online. Electors can apply for a Special Ballot online starting November 20 by phone, by email, or in person at their returning office or Elections Alberta’s head office in Edmonton. Requests to have Special Ballots sent out must be received by December 9 at 6:00pm. Requests to in-person and pick-up Special Ballots can be done until 8:00 pm on December 18. Apply NowImportant: please be sure there is enough time to receive and return your Special Ballot.
Special Ballot packages are normally delivered internationally by Canada Post XpressPost services; however, due to the current Canada Post strike, your package may be delivered via another courier. Please note you may need to find an alternative method to return your Special Ballot if the strike continues, such as a non-Canada Post courier or dropping it off in person.
Remember:
To complete your Special Ballot properly, you must include a copy of your identification, review and sign the declaration, and return the ballot on time. Ballots returned late are rejected and will not be counted.
